5 Lessons at Augusta National
Augusta National Golf Club, often known as Augusta National, lies in Augusta, Georgia. Founded in 1898, it plays host to the annual Masters Tournament and is the only major played at the same course each year.
I have had the great pleasure of playing several rounds of golf at Augusta National, a truly spectacular experience - the beauty of nature, the pressure to make the best shot, the weight of knowing renowned players have played on the same green, the variety of challenges of each hole. As I reflect on these experiences, here are five lessons that translate to great leadership!
1) Think of the shot you want to make, not the shot you don't want to make.
The shots we make are the ones we think we can make. Put another way, we move in the direction of our thoughts and focus. Good leaders focus on what they want, not on what they're seeking to avoid.
2) Pay attention to your surroundings.
The wind, the trees, the elevation, the bunkers...all of these matter in the game of golf. With your organization and team, pay close attention to what's happening around and within. Regularly consider and adjust to the elements that influence your people, and strategically address them with intention.
3) Wisely choose those who will be a part of your foursome team.
Your team matters! Those closest to you determine your success...or your faltering. Surround yourself with wise, motivated, complimentary people to enhance your production and service.
4) Don't take yourself too seriously.
At Augusta National you will definitely make mistakes; it is not an easy course to play, even for the pros. As errors occur, let yourself laugh, learn, and do better next time.
5) Keep a grateful attitude.
Playing at Augusta was a privilege for me. What incredible views and experiences with people I hold in high honor! Our leadership role is also a privilege, one that not many people get to do. Let's be thankful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity.
Leadership Development International desires that you successfully maneuver through the bunkers, ponds, various terrain, and elevation shifts of life and leadership.
